Glass size and weight
A large insulated unit may need extra crew members, glass-handling equipment, delivery coordination, or interior protection.
2026 Fixed-window cost planner
Estimate the installed cost to replace one or more fixed picture windows. Picture style is preselected; adjust frame, glass, installation scope, access, repairs, extras, and market for the opening you are pricing.
Use this page when the bid is for the whole fixed window. If only the sealed glass failed and the frame is still sound, compare the full replacement range with a glass-only IGU quote before approving the larger project.
For replacement picture window prices, enter the exact quantity, frame, glass package, access, and installation scope. Large fixed glass can be inexpensive in hardware but expensive in handling, safety glazing, and finish work.

Actual bid intake
Enter the opening size and up to three itemized bids, then compare the contractor total against the same-size installed planning range and a split of unit, labor, finish, access, repair, and permit lines.

Quote sanity check
Enter dimensions and an optional quote total, then compare. Without a quote total, this remains a same-size budget estimate.
Installed planning ranges
A fixed sash removes operating hardware, but picture windows are often large, heavy, custom-sized, or high on a wall. Compare the complete installed assembly rather than assuming fixed always means inexpensive.
| Frame | Installed range | Major variables |
|---|---|---|
| Vinyl frame | $705–$3,275 | Dimensions, glass, color, access, scope, and opening condition |
| Wood frame | $1,050–$5,200 | Species or cladding, finish, custom sizing, glass, and trim |
Planning data and adjustments are documented in the calculator methodology and downloadable 2026 source table. Use them for budgeting, not as a contractor quote.
Where the quote changes
A large insulated unit may need extra crew members, glass-handling equipment, delivery coordination, or interior protection.
Tempered or laminated safety glass, Low-E coatings, gas fill, triple panes, impact ratings, tint, and decorative grids change the unit price.
Upper-story openings, stairwells, landscaping, restricted exterior access, and tall interior walls add setup and handling time.
Full-frame removal, flashing, rot repair, insulation, exterior cladding, casing, drywall, paint, and trim should appear clearly in the proposal.
If a contractor bundles fixed windows with operating units, run the replacement window cost calculator separately so the picture-window price does not hide other openings.
Quote comparison
Picture-window proposals can look inconsistent when one contractor includes only the window and another includes lift equipment, multiple installers, flashing, trim, wall repair, disposal, and paint. Ask every bidder to price the same dimensions and work scope.
For energy performance, compare whole-product U-factor and solar heat gain coefficient rather than relying only on phrases such as “double-pane” or “energy-efficient glass.” Orientation, climate, coatings, frame, spacers, air leakage, and installation quality affect the result.

Plain answers
This calculator uses installed planning ranges of approximately $705 to $3,275 for a vinyl-frame picture window and $1,050 to $5,200 for wood before project adjustments. Large dimensions, custom shapes, premium glass, difficult access, full-frame work, and damaged framing can push a quote higher.
A picture window has no operating hardware, but it is often much larger than a standard sash. The glass area, frame span, custom dimensions, safety-glazing rules, carrying equipment, crew size, access, and finish work can outweigh the savings from simpler hardware.
Sometimes. A glass company may be able to replace a failed insulated glass unit when the frame, seals, drainage, flashing, and surrounding opening remain serviceable. A cracked frame, persistent leakage, rot, poor installation, or a planned efficiency upgrade may justify replacing the complete window instead.
Yes. The result is an installed planning range. Choose insert, full-frame, or altered-opening work, then adjust access, glass, market, repairs, grids, and trim so the estimate resembles the scope contractors will price.
